VERSES ABOUT VICES AND ADDICTIONS

Addiction and bad habits can be so destructive. Think about it, addiction is clinging to something—a behavior, a substance, an activity, even a person—that's actually harming you. So many of us struggle with these things, feeling trapped by a vice or an addiction. Sometimes, we feel like it's because of our past.

But here's the truth: in God, we're free. Christ set us free from all of that and forgave our sins. If you keep dwelling on the past, those chains can really hold you back. Sometimes, these struggles can even stem from negative spiritual influences, finding a foothold and coming to light when we unknowingly open a door, giving the enemy a legal right to step in.

You have the power to let go of what's binding you. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any areas of bondage you need to address. Receive God's forgiveness and His healing. He's there for you.

I pray that we all find freedom from anything that's hurting us and holding us back. Just like it says in John 8:36, "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."

Ephesians 5:25-26

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,

so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,

Proverbs 18:22

He who finds a wife finds a good thing And obtains favor from Yahweh.

1 Corinthians 7:3-4

The husband must fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise also the wife to her husband.

and those who cry, as though they did not cry; and those who rejoice, as though they did not rejoice; and those who buy, as though they did not possess;

and those who use the world, as though they did not make full use of it. For the form of this world is passing away.

But I want you to be free from concern. One who is unmarried is concerned about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord.

But one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how he may please his wife,

and his interests have been divided. The woman who is unmarried, and the virgin, is concerned about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and spirit. But one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how she may please her husband.

Now this I say for your own benefit, not to put a restraint upon you, but to promote propriety and undistracted devotion to the Lord.

But if any man thinks that he is acting unbecomingly toward his virgin daughter, if she is past her youth, and if it must be so, let him do what he wishes, he does not sin; let her marry.

But he who stands firm in his heart, being under no compulsion, but has authority over his own will, and has decided this in his own heart, to keep his own virgin daughter, he will do well.

So then both he who gives his own virgin daughter in marriage does well, and he who does not give her in marriage will do better.

A wife is bound as long as her husband lives; but if her husband has fallen asleep, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.

The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.

Colossians 3:12-17

So, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience;

bearing with one another, and graciously forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone, just as the Lord graciously forgave you, so also should you.

Above all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body, and be thankful.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with gratefulness in your hearts to God.

And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Ephesians 5:3-5

But sexual immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints;

because we are members of His body.

For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.

This mystery is great, but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.

Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband.

nor filthiness and foolish talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.

Ephesians 5:22-33

Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.

But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,

so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,

that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she would be holy and blameless.

So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself;

for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church,

But sexual immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints;

because we are members of His body.

For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.

This mystery is great, but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.

Do not contend with a man without cause, If he has dealt you no harm.

Do not envy a man of violence And do not choose any of his ways.

For the devious one is an abomination to Yahweh; But His secret council is with the upright.

The curse of Yahweh is on the house of the wicked one, But He blesses the abode of the righteous.

Though He scoffs at the scoffers, Yet He gives grace to the humble.

The wise will inherit glory, But fools raise up disgrace.

So you will find favor and good insight In the eyes of God and man.

1 Peter 3:1-7

In the same way, you wives, be subject to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives,

For, “The one who desires life, to love and see good days, Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.

“He must turn away from evil and do good; He must seek peace and pursue it.

“For the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous, And His ears attend to their prayer, But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

And who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good?

But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. And do not fear their fear, and do not be troubled,

but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and fear,

having a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who disparage your good conduct in Christ will be put to shame.

For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing good rather than for doing wrong.

For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, so that He might bring you to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;

in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison,

as they observe your pure conduct with fear.

who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.

Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal of a good conscience to God—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.

Your adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on garments;

but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible quality of a lowly and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.

For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being subject to their own husbands,

just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You have become her children if you do good, not fearing any intimidation.

You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with a weaker vessel, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

But you did not learn Christ in this way—

and to be renewed in the spirit of your mind,

and to put on the new man, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.

Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,

1 Corinthians 7:2-5

But because of sexual immoralities, each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband.

Each man must remain in that condition in which he was called.

Were you called while a slave? Do not worry about it. But if you are able also to become free, rather do that.

For he who was called in the Lord while a slave, is the Lord’s freedman. Likewise he who was called while free, is Christ’s slave.

You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men.

Brothers, each one is to remain with God in that condition in which he was called.

Now concerning virgins I have no command of the Lord, but I give an opinion as one who by the mercy of the Lord is trustworthy.

I think then that this is good because of the present distress, that it is good for a man to remain as he is.

Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be released. Are you released from a wife? Do not seek a wife.

But if you marry, you have not sinned. And if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. Yet such will have trouble in this life, and I am trying to spare you.

But this I say, brothers, the time has been shortened, so that from now on those who have wives should be as though they had none;

The husband must fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise also the wife to her husband.

and those who cry, as though they did not cry; and those who rejoice, as though they did not rejoice; and those who buy, as though they did not possess;

and those who use the world, as though they did not make full use of it.

But in my opinion she is happier if she remains as she is. And I think that I also have the Spirit of God.

Philippians 2:2-4

fulfill my joy, that you think the same way, by maintaining the same love, being united in spirit, thinking on one purpose,

For I have no one else of kindred spirit who will genuinely be concerned about your circumstances.

For they all seek after their own interests, not those of Christ Jesus.

But you know of his proven worth, that he served with me in the furtherance of the gospel like a child serving his father.

Therefore I hope to send him immediately, as soon as I evaluate my own circumstances,

and I am confident in the Lord that I myself also will be coming shortly.

But I regarded it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger and minister to my need;

because he was longing for you all and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick.

For indeed he was sick to the point of death, but God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow.

Therefore I have sent him all the more eagerly so that when you see him again you may rejoice and I may be less concerned.

Receive him then in the Lord with all joy, and hold men like him in high regard

doing nothing from selfish ambition or vain glory, but with humility of mind regarding one another as more important than yourselves,

because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life to fulfill what was lacking in your service to me.

Prayer

Eternal and good God, Most High Lord! I praise you for you are just, holy, and worthy of all supreme praise and adoration. Holy Father, I ask you to transform my life because I am truly being tempted by vices. Help me understand that only in you can I find new life. I ask that the fire of your Holy Spirit consume within me all unclean vices, and that drugs no longer wreak havoc on humanity. Holy Father, I cry out to you, recognizing that only you have the power to renew and transform my life for good and forever. Help me stand firm against the cravings of this vice, and may your power give me the strength to overcome this addiction so I can begin to put my life in order. Under your guidance, may I recover my health, finances, and my family. Your word says, "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." Grant me self-control and keep me from bad company that, in one way or another, leads me to fall into the temptation of vices, because truly, bad company corrupts good character. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
