I want to talk to you about something that might be hitting close to home: the struggle with alcohol. It can lead us down some pretty rough paths, hurting ourselves and those around us. It's important to really think about the ripple effect our choices have, you know? We have to own our actions.
If you're finding yourself in situations where alcohol is taking control, please know there's support out there. Don't hesitate to reach out and get the help you need to stay safe and healthy.
From my perspective, alcoholism, like any addiction, is a form of idolatry. Anything we turn to instead of God to fill that deep need in our hearts becomes an idol, and ultimately, a spiritual chain.
I want to share something that can truly set you free from this struggle. It's the power of Christ's blood. I believe it's strong enough to cleanse you, detoxify you, and make you a new person. There's real freedom waiting for you.
will share in God's kingdom. Neither will any thief or greedy person or drunkard or anyone who curses and cheats others.
Be on your guard and stay awake. Your enemy, the devil, is like a roaring lion, sneaking around to find someone to attack.
It is best not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything else that causes problems for other followers of the Lord.
But if we confess our sins to God, he can always be trusted to forgive us and take our sins away.
Don't even look at that colorful stuff bubbling up in the glass! It goes down so easily,
People's desires make them give in to immoral ways, filthy thoughts, and shameful deeds.
I, Paul, promise you that Christ won't do you any good if you get circumcised.
They worship idols, practice witchcraft, hate others, and are hard to get along with. People become jealous, angry, and selfish. They not only argue and cause trouble, but they are
envious. They get drunk, carry on at wild parties, and do other evil things as well. I told you before, and I am telling you again: No one who does these things will share in the blessings of God's kingdom.
You are in for trouble! You get up early to start drinking, and you keep it up late into the night.
At your drinking parties you have the music of stringed instruments, tambourines, and flutes. But you never even think about all the Lord has done,
Don't be a heavy drinker or stuff yourself with food.
It will make you feel drowsy, and you will end up poor with only rags to wear.
Who is always in trouble? Who argues and fights? Who has cuts and bruises? Whose eyes are red?
Don't be greedy for all of that fancy food! It may not be so tasty.
Everyone who stays up late, having just one more drink.
Don't even look at that colorful stuff bubbling up in the glass! It goes down so easily,
but later it bites like a poisonous snake.
You will see weird things, and your mind will play tricks on you.
You will feel tossed about like someone trying to sleep on a ship in a storm.
You will be bruised all over, without even remembering how it all happened. And you will lie awake asking, “When will morning come, so I can drink some more?”
You have already lived long enough like people who don't know God. You were immoral and followed your evil desires. You went around drinking and partying and carrying on. In fact, you even worshiped disgusting idols.
Church officers should be serious. They must not be liars, heavy drinkers, or greedy for money.
Kings and leaders should not get drunk or even want to drink.
Drinking makes you forget your responsibilities, and you mistreat the poor.
You hold in your hand a cup filled with wine, strong and foaming. You will pour out some for every sinful person on this earth, and they will have to drink until it is gone.
Don't spend all of your time thinking about eating or drinking or worrying about life. If you do, the final day will suddenly catch you
So behave properly, as people do in the day. Don't go to wild parties or get drunk or be vulgar or indecent. Don't quarrel or be jealous.
Let the Lord Jesus Christ be as near to you as the clothes you wear. Then you won't try to satisfy your selfish desires.
I was talking about your own people who are immoral or greedy or worship idols or curse others or get drunk or cheat. Don't even eat with them!
Beer and wine are only for the dying or for those who have lost all hope.
Let them drink and forget how poor and miserable they feel.
envious. They get drunk, carry on at wild parties, and do other evil things as well. I told you before, and I am telling you again: No one who does these things will share in the blessings of God's kingdom.
But a nation will prosper when its ruler is mature, and its leaders don't party too much.
Here are some proverbs of Solomon: Children with good sense make their parents happy, but foolish children make them sad.
You treat me to a feast, while my enemies watch. You honor me as your guest, and you fill my cup until it overflows.
Suppose this evil servant starts beating the other servants and eats and drinks with people who are drunk.
But suppose one of the servants thinks that the master won't return until late. Suppose that servant starts beating all the other servants and eats and drinks and gets drunk.
If that happens, the master will come on a day and at a time when the servant least expects him. That servant will then be punished and thrown out with the servants who cannot be trusted.
God's kingdom isn't about eating and drinking. It is about pleasing God, about living in peace, and about true happiness. All this comes from the Holy Spirit.
You even start eating before everyone gets to the meeting, and some of you go hungry, while others get drunk.
I wanted to find out what was best for us during the short time we have on this earth. So I decided to make myself happy with wine and find out what it means to be foolish, without really being foolish myself.
Dear friends, you are foreigners and strangers on this earth. So I beg you not to surrender to those desires that fight against you.
The city of Samaria above a fertile valley is in for trouble! Its leaders are drunkards, who stuff themselves with food and wine. But they will be like flowers that dry up and wilt.
You don't even listen— all you hear is senseless sound after senseless sound.
So, the Lord will speak to his people in strange sounds and foreign languages.
He promised you perfect peace and rest, but you refused to listen.
Now his message to you will be senseless sound after senseless sound. Then you will fall backwards, injured and trapped.
You rulers of Jerusalem do nothing but sneer; now you must listen to what the Lord says.
Do you think you have an agreement with death and the world of the dead? Why do you trust in your lies to keep you safe from danger and the mighty flood?
And so the Lord says, “I'm laying a firm foundation for the city of Zion. It's a valuable cornerstone proven to be trustworthy; no one who trusts it will ever be disappointed.
Justice and fairness will be the measuring lines that help me build.” Hailstones and floods will destroy and wash away your shelter of lies.
Your agreement with death and the world of the dead will be broken. Then angry, roaring waves will sweep over you.
Morning, noon, and night an overwhelming flood will wash you away. The terrible things that happen will teach you this lesson:
Only the Lord is strong and powerful! His mighty hand will strike them down with the force of a hailstorm or a mighty whirlwind or an overwhelming flood.
Your bed is too short, your blanket too skimpy.
The Lord will fiercely attack as he did at Mount Perazim and in Gibeon Valley. But this time the Lord will do something surprising, not what you expect.
So you had better stop sneering or you will be in worse shape than ever before. I heard the Lord All-Powerful threaten the whole country with destruction.
Pay close attention to what I am saying.
Farmers don't just plow and break up the ground.
When a field is ready, they scatter the seeds of dill and cumin; they plant the seeds of wheat and barley in the proper places and sow other grains around the edges.
They learn this from their God.
After dill and cumin have been harvested, the stalks are pounded, not run over with a wagon.
Wheat and barley are pounded, but not beaten to pulp; they are run over with a wagon, but not ground to dust.
This wonderful knowledge comes from the Lord All-Powerful, who has such great wisdom.
Every drunkard in Ephraim takes pride in Samaria, but it will be crushed.
His words were smoother than butter, and softer than olive oil. But hatred filled his heart, and he was ready to attack with a sword.
It makes good sense to obey the Law of God, but you disgrace your parents if you make friends with worthless nobodies.
Don't be like the people of this world, but let God change the way you think. Then you will know how to do everything that is good and pleasing to him.
Stop drinking only water. Take a little wine to help your stomach trouble and the other illnesses you often have.
Stupidity brings happiness to senseless fools, but everyone with good sense follows the straight path.
You know that many runners enter a race, and only one of them wins the prize. So run to win!
Athletes work hard to win a crown that cannot last, but we do it for a crown that will last forever.
I don't run without a goal. And I don't box by beating my fists in the air.
I keep my body under control and make it my slave, so I won't lose out after telling the good news to others.
Your son will be a great servant of the Lord. He must never drink wine or beer, and the power of the Holy Spirit will be with him from the time he is born.
because God's gift to us is the happiness we get from our food and drink and from the work we do.
Don't be controlled by your body. Kill every desire for the wrong kind of sex. Don't be immoral or indecent or have evil thoughts. Don't be greedy, which is the same as worshiping idols.
My friends, you are spiritual. So if someone is trapped in sin, you should gently lead that person back to the right path. But watch out, and don't be tempted yourself.
Don't let me want to do evil or waste my time doing wrong with wicked people. Don't let me even taste the good things they offer.
From now on I am not going to drink any wine, until I drink new wine with you in my Father's kingdom.”
To everyone who is thirsty, he gives something to drink; to everyone who is hungry, he gives good things to eat.
Dear friends, God is good. So I beg you to offer your bodies to him as a living sacrifice, pure and pleasing. That's the most sensible way to serve God.
I will keep my promises to you, my God, and bring you gifts.
You protected me from death and kept me from stumbling, so that I would please you and follow the light that leads to life.
But the Son of Man goes around eating and drinking, and you say, “That man eats and drinks too much! He is even a friend of tax collectors and sinners.” Yet Wisdom is shown to be right by what it does.
But because the Son of Man goes around eating and drinking, you say, “Jesus eats and drinks too much! He is even a friend of tax collectors and sinners.”
When you are invited to eat with a king, use your best manners.
Don't move a boundary marker or take the land that belongs to orphans.
God All-Powerful is there to defend them against you.
Listen to instruction and do your best to learn.
Don't fail to correct your children. You won't kill them by being firm,
and it may even save their lives.
My children, if you show good sense, I will be happy,
and if you are truthful, I will really be glad.
Don't be jealous of sinners, but always honor the Lord.
Then you will truly have hope for the future.
Listen to me, my children! Be wise and have enough sense to follow the right path.
Don't go and stuff yourself! That would be just the same as cutting your throat.
Don't be a heavy drinker or stuff yourself with food.
It will make you feel drowsy, and you will end up poor with only rags to wear.
Pay attention to your father, and don't neglect your mother when she grows old.
Invest in truth and wisdom, discipline and good sense, and don't part with them.
Make your father truly happy by living right and showing sound judgment.
Make your parents proud, especially your mother.
My son, pay close attention, and gladly follow my example.
Bad women and unfaithful wives are like a deep pit—
they are waiting to attack you like a gang of robbers with victim after victim.
Who is always in trouble? Who argues and fights? Who has cuts and bruises? Whose eyes are red?
Don't be greedy for all of that fancy food! It may not be so tasty.
The Spirit and your desires are enemies of each other. They are always fighting each other and keeping you from doing what you feel you should.
You say to each other, “Let's drink till we're drunk! Tomorrow we'll do it again. We'll really enjoy ourselves.”
But if you do have doubts about what you eat, you are going against your beliefs. And you know that is wrong, because anything you do against your beliefs is sin.
An evil person borrows and never pays back; a good person is generous and never stops giving.
But I wasn't talking about the people of this world. You would have to leave this world to get away from everyone who is immoral or greedy or who cheats or worships idols.
If you love wisdom your parents will be glad, but chasing after bad women will cost you everything.
If our faith is strong, we should be patient with the Lord's followers whose faith is weak. We should try to please them instead of ourselves.
The Scriptures also say to the Gentiles, “Come and celebrate with God's people.”
Again the Scriptures say, “Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles. All you nations, come and worship him.”
Isaiah says, “Someone from David's family will come to power. He will rule the nations, and they will put their hope in him.”
I pray that God, who gives hope, will bless you with complete happiness and peace because of your faith. And may the power of the Holy Spirit fill you with hope.
My friends, I am sure that you are very good and that you have all the knowledge you need to teach each other.
But I have spoken to you plainly and have tried to remind you of some things. God treated me with undeserved grace!
He chose me to be a servant of Christ Jesus for the Gentiles and to do the work of a priest in the service of his good news. God did this so that the Holy Spirit could make the Gentiles into a holy offering, pleasing to him.
Because of Christ Jesus, I can take pride in my service for God.
In fact, all I will talk about is how Christ let me speak and work, so that the Gentiles would obey him.
Indeed, I will tell how Christ worked miracles and wonders by the power of the Holy Spirit. I have preached the good news about him all the way from Jerusalem to Illyricum.
We should think of their good and try to help them by doing what pleases them.
But what about those people who are cruel and brutal? You will throw them down into the deepest pit long before their time. I trust you, Lord!
People's desires make them give in to immoral ways, filthy thoughts, and shameful deeds.
Behave like obedient children. Don't let your lives be controlled by your desires, as they used to be.
Some of you say, “We can do whatever we want to!” But I tell you not everything may be good or helpful.
Priests and prophets stumble because they are drunk. Their minds are too confused to receive God's messages or give honest decisions.
If our minds are ruled by our desires, we will die. But if our minds are ruled by the Spirit, we will have life and peace.
I keep my body under control and make it my slave, so I won't lose out after telling the good news to others.
He cursed others more often than he dressed himself. Let his curses strike him deep, just as water and olive oil soak through to our bones.
Disappoint and confuse all who are glad to see me in trouble; disgrace and embarrass my proud enemies who say to me, “You are nothing!”
Then I'll say to myself, ‘You have stored up enough good things to last for years to come. Live it up! Eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.’ ”
