Because they have forsaken me and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath will be kindled against this place, and it will not be quenched.

For to the man who pleases him God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy; but to the sinner he gives the work of gathering and heaping, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.


Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man's envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.


The ox knows its owner, and the ass its master's crib; but Israel does not know, my people does not understand.”


Ah, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, sons who deal corruptly! They have forsaken the Lord, they have despised the Holy One of Israel, they are utterly estranged.


With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.


Therefore my people go into exile for want of knowledge; their honored men are dying of hunger, and their multitude is parched with thirst.


Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Hearken diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in fatness.


For he said, Surely they are my people, sons who will not deal falsely; and he became their Savior.


And I will utter my judgments against them, for all their wickedness in forsaking me; they have burned incense to other gods, and worshiped the works of their own hands.


Her nobles send their servants for water; they come to the cisterns, they find no water, they return with their vessels empty; they are ashamed and confounded and cover their heads.


You have rejected me, says the Lord, you keep going backward; so I have stretched out my hand against you and destroyed you;— I am weary of relenting.


O Lord, the hope of Israel, all who forsake thee shall be put to shame; those who turn away from thee shall be written in the earth, for they have forsaken the Lord, the fountain of living water.


Does the snow of Lebanon leave the crags of Sirion? Do the mountain waters run dry, the cold flowing streams?


Because the people have forsaken me, and have profaned this place by burning incense in it to other gods whom neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah have known; and because they have filled this place with the blood of innocents,


Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit.


Have you not brought this upon yourself by forsaking the Lord your God, when he led you in the way?


“As a thief is shamed when caught, so the house of Israel shall be shamed: they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets,


“For my people are foolish, they know me not; they are stupid children, they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil, but how to do good they know not.”


For wicked men are found among my people; they lurk like fowlers lying in wait. They set a trap; they catch men.


the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule at their direction; my people love to have it so, but what will you do when the end comes?


that I may lay hold of the hearts of the house of Israel, who are all estranged from me through their idols.


Then he brought me back to the door of the temple; and behold, water was issuing from below the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east); and the water was flowing down from below the south end of the threshold of the temple, south of the altar.


But you rise against my people as an enemy; you strip the robe from the peaceful, from those who pass by trustingly with no thought of war.


“O my people, what have I done to you? In what have I wearied you? Answer me!


“On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.


Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”


The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; where do you get that living water?


but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”


On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, “If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink.


And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, you are about to sleep with your fathers; then this people will rise and play the harlot after the strange gods of the land, where they go to be among them, and they will forsake me and break my covenant which I have made with them.


These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm; for them the nether gloom of darkness has been reserved.


And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the fountain of the water of life without payment.


Then he showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb


The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let him who hears say, “Come.” And let him who is thirsty come, let him who desires take the water of life without price.


Yet you have forsaken me and served other gods; therefore I will deliver you no more.


And they cried to the Lord, and said, ‘We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord, and have served the Baals and the Ashtaroth; but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.’
