Because they have forsaken me, and have sacrificed to strange gods, provoking me by all the works of their hands: therefore my indignation shall be kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched.

I have seen all things that are done under the sun, and behold all is vanity, and vexation of spirit.

For when a man laboureth in wisdom, and knowledge, and carefulness, he leaveth what he hath gotten to an idle man: so this also is vanity, and a great evil.


God hath given to a man that is good in his sight, wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he hath given vexation, and superfluous care, to heap up and to gather together, and to give it to him that hath pleased God: but this also is vanity, and a fruitless solicitude of the mind.


Again I considered all the labours of men, and I remarked that their industries are exposed to the envy of their neighbour: so in this also there is vanity, and fruitless care.


The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel hath not known me, and my people hath not understood.


Woe to the sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a wicked seed, ungracious children: they have forsaken the Lord, they have blasphemed the Holy One of Israel, they are gone away backwards.


You shall draw waters with joy out of the saviour's fountains.


Therefore is my people led away captive, because they had not knowledge: and their nobles have perished with famine, and their multitude were dried up with thirst.


Why do you spend money for that which is not bread and your labour for that which doth not satisfy you? Hearken diligently to me and eat that which is good: and your soul shall be delighted in fatness.


And he said: Surely they are my people, children that will not deny. So he became their saviour.


And I will pronounce my judgements against them, touching all their wickedness, who have forsaken me and have sacrificed to strange gods and have adored the work of their own hands.


The great ones sent their inferiors to the water: they came to draw, they found no water, they carried back their vessels empty: they were confounded and afflicted, and covered their heads.


Thou hast forsaken me, saith the Lord, thou art gone backward: and I will stretch out my hand against thee, and I will destroy thee. I am weary of entreating thee.


O Lord, the hope of Israel: all that forsake thee shall be confounded: they that depart from thee shall be written in the earth: because they have forsaken the Lord, the vein of living waters.


Shall now the snow of Libanus fail from the rock of the field? Or can the cold waters that gush out and run down be taken away?


Because they have forsaken me and have profaned this place and have sacrificed therein to strange gods, whom neither they nor their fathers knew, nor the kings of Juda. And they have filled this place with the blood of innocents.


If a nation hath changed their gods, and indeed they are not gods: but my people have changed their glory into an idol.


Hath not this been done to thee, because thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, at that time when he led thee by the way?


As the thief is confounded when he is taken, so is the house of Israel confounded, they and their kings, their princes and their priests and their prophets.


For my foolish people have not known me: they are foolish and senseless children. They are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.


For among my people are found wicked men that lie in wait as fowlers, setting snares and traps to catch men.


The prophets prophesied falsehood, and the priests clapped their hands: and my people loved such things. What then shall be done in the end thereof?


That the house of Israel may be caught in their own heart, with which they have departed from me through all their idols.


And he brought me again to the gate of the house, and behold waters issued out from under the threshold of the house toward the east: for the forefront, of the house looked toward the east: but the waters came down to the right side of the temple to the south part of the altar.


But my people, on the contrary, are risen up as an enemy: you have taken away the cloak off from the coat: and them that passed harmless you have turned to war.


O my people, what have I done to thee, or in what have I molested thee? answer thou me.


In that day there shall be a fountain open to the house of David, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem: for the washing of the sinner, and of the unclean woman.


Jesus answered, and said to her: If thou didst know the gift of God, and who he is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou perhaps wouldst have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.


The woman saith to him: Sir, thou hast nothing wherein to draw, and the well is deep; from whence then hast thou living water?


But the water that I will give him, shall become in him a fountain of water, springing up into life everlasting.


And on the last, and great day of the festivity, Jesus stood and cried, saying: If any man thirst, let him come to me, and drink.


And the Lord said to Moses: Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, and this people rising up will go a-fornicating after strange gods in the land, to which it goeth in to dwell. There will they forsake me, and will make void the covenant, which I have made with them,


These are fountains without water, and clouds tossed with whirlwinds, to whom the mist of darkness is reserved.


And he said to me: It is done. I am Alpha and Omega; the beginning and the end. To him that thirsteth, I will give of the fountain of the water of life, freely.


And he shewed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb.


And the spirit and the bride say: Come. And he that heareth, let him say: Come. And he that thirsteth, let him come: and he that will, let him take the water of life, freely.


And yet you have forsaken me, and have worshipped strange gods: therefore I will deliver you no more.


But afterwards they cried to the Lord, and said: We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord, and have served Baalim and Astaroth. But now deliver us from the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.
