Then Abraham spoke up again. He said, “I have been very bold to speak to the Lord. After all, I’m only dust and ashes.


Then he prayed, “Lord, you are the God of my master Abraham. Make me successful today. Be kind to my master Abraham.


He said, “I praise the Lord, the God of my master Abraham. The Lord hasn’t stopped being kind and faithful to my master. The Lord has led me on this journey. He has brought me to the house of my master’s relatives.”


The Lord stood beside the stairway. He said, “I am the Lord. I am the God of your grandfather Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your children after you the land you are lying on.


I am with you. I will watch over you everywhere you go. And I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”


That’s how Jacob became very rich. He became the owner of large flocks. He also had many male and female servants. And he had many camels and donkeys.


Then the Lord spoke to Jacob. He said, “Go back to your father’s land and to your relatives. I will be with you.”


I have cattle and donkeys and sheep and goats. I also have male and female servants. Now I’m sending this message to you. I hope I can please you.” ’ ”


Jacob was very worried and afraid. So he separated the people with him into two groups. He also separated the flocks and herds and camels.


David went to Mahanaim. Absalom went across the Jordan River with all the men of Israel.


Then King David went into the holy tent. He sat down in front of the Lord. He said, “Lord and King, who am I? My family isn’t important. So why have you brought me this far?


But godly people will keep doing what is right. Those who have clean hands will grow stronger.


In the past, things went well with you. But in days to come, things will get even better.


I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord. Without you, I don’t have anything that is good.”


Lord, you are like a shield that keeps me safe. Your strong right hand keeps me going. Your help has made me great.


May he always enjoy your blessing as he rules. Let your love and truth keep him safe.


You have made them a little lower than the angels. You placed on them a crown of glory and honor.


Those people get stronger as they go along, until each of them appears in Zion, where God lives.


God’s truth and faithful love join together. His peace and holiness kiss each other.


The path of those who do right is like the sun in the morning. It shines brighter and brighter until the full light of day.


“How terrible it is for me!” I cried out. “I’m about to be destroyed! My mouth speaks sinful words. And I live among people who speak sinful words. Now I have seen the King with my own eyes. He is the Lord who rules over all.”


I will talk about the kind things the Lord has done. I’ll praise him for everything he’s done for us. He has done many good things for the nation of Israel. That’s because he loves us and is very kind to us.


You will be faithful to Jacob’s people. You will show your love to Abraham’s children. You will do what you promised to do for our people. You made that promise long ago.


It’s the same with you. Suppose you have done everything you were told to do. Then you should say, ‘We are not worthy to serve you. We have only done our duty.’ ”


When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees. “Go away from me, Lord!” he said. “I am a sinful man!”


I have made a fool of myself. But you made me do it. You should have praised me. Even though I am nothing, I am in no way less important than the “super-apostles.”


But remember the Lord your God. He gives you the ability to produce wealth. That shows he stands by the terms of the covenant he made with you. He promised it to your people of long ago. And he’s still faithful to his covenant today.


In the same way, I’m speaking to you who are younger. Follow the lead of those who are older. All of you, put on a spirit free of pride toward one another. Put it on as if it were your clothes. Do this because Scripture says, “God opposes those who are proud. But he gives grace to those who are humble.” (Proverbs 3:34)
