Isaac was 40 years old when he married Rebekah. She was the daughter of Bethuel, the Aramean from Paddan Aram. She was also the sister of Laban, the Aramean.


Now then, my son, do what I say. Run away at once to my brother Laban in Harran.


Esau found out that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram. Isaac wanted him to get a wife from there. Esau heard that when Isaac blessed Jacob, he commanded him, “Don’t get married to a woman from Canaan.”


Then Esau realized how much his father Isaac disliked Canaanite women.


“Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long time in the land the Lord your God is giving you.


My son, listen to your father’s advice. Don’t turn away from your mother’s teaching.


“One person makes fun of their father. Another doesn’t honor their mother when she is old. The ravens of the valley will peck out their eyes. Then the vultures will eat them.


“ ‘All of you must have respect for your mother and father. You must always keep my Sabbath days. I am the Lord your God.


Children, obey your parents as believers in the Lord. Obey them because it’s the right thing to do.


“Then things will go well with you. You will live a long time on the earth.” (Deuteronomy 5:16)


Children, obey your parents in everything. That pleases the Lord.
