And when they had brought them, he gave them food in exchange for their horses, and sheep, and oxen, and asses: And he maintained them that year for the exchange of their cattle.


At that time, Hanani the prophet came to Asa king of Juda, and said to him: Because thou hast had confidence in the king of Syria, and not in the Lord thy God, therefore hath the army of the king of Syria escaped out of thy hand.


For the eyes of the Lord behold all the earth, and give strength to those who with a perfect heart trust in him. Wherefore, thou hast done foolishly, and for this cause from this time wars shall arise against thee.


Wilt thou have confidence in his great strength, and leave thy labours to him?


For thou shalt give him to be a blessing for ever and ever: thou shalt make him joyful in gladness with thy countenance.


And the light of Israel shall be as a fire, and the Holy One thereof as a flame: and his thorns and his briers shall be set on fire and shall be devoured in one day.


Their land is filled with silver and gold: and there is no end of their treasures.


And they shall be afraid, and ashamed of Ethiopia their hope, and of Egypt their glory.


And you made a ditch between the two walls for the water of the old pool: and you have not looked up to the maker thereof, nor regarded him even at a distance, that wrought it long ago.


But have said: No, but we will flee to horses: therefore shall you flee. And we will mount upon swift ones: therefore shall they be swifter that shall pursue after you.


Lo, thou trustest upon this broken staff of a reed, upon Egypt: upon which if a man lean, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharao king or Egypt to all that trust in him.


And how wilt thou stand against the face of the judge of one place, of the least of my master's servants? But if thou trust in Egypt, in chariots and in horsemen:


I am the Lord, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King.


The harp and the lyre and the timbrel and the pipe and wine are in your feasts: and the work of the Lord you regard not, nor do you consider the works of his hands.


And thou hast adorned thyself for the king with ointment and hast multiplied thy perfumes. Thou hast sent thy messengers far off and wast debased even to hell.


There is none that calleth upon thy name: that riseth up and taketh hold of thee: Thou hast hid thy face from us and hast crushed us in the hand of our iniquity.


The Syrians from the east, and the Philistines from the west: and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his indignation is not turned away: but his hand is stretched out still.


And the people are not returned to him who hath struck them, and have not sought after the Lord of hosts.


Thus saith the Lord: Cursed be the man that trusteth in man and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord!


For my people have done two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and have digged to themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.


And the Chaldeans shall come again and fight against this city and take it and burn it with fire.


Saying: No, but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war nor hear the sound of the trumpet nor suffer hunger; and there we will dwell.


But he hath revolted from him and sent ambassadors to Egypt, that it might give him horses and much people. And shall he that hath done thus prosper or be saved? And shall he escape that hath broken the covenant?


And they shall be no more a confidence to the house of Israel, teaching iniquity, that they may flee, and follow them: and they shall know that I am the Lord God.


He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king: because they would not be converted.


I will not execute the fierceness of my wrath: I will not return to destroy Ephraim: because I am God, and not man: the holy one in the midst of thee, and I will not enter into the city.


Take with you words, and return to the Lord, and say to him: Take away all iniquity, and receive the good: and we will render the calves of our lips.


They were all heated like an oven, and have devoured their judges: all their kings have fallen: there is none amongst them that calleth unto me.


Wast thou not from the beginning, O Lord my God, my holy one, and we shall not die? Lord, thou hast appointed him for judgment: and made him strong for correction.


God will come from the south, and the holy one from mount Pharan: His glory covered the heavens, and the earth is full of his praise.


And they shall be as mighty men, treading under foot the mire of the ways in battle: and they shall fight, because the Lord is with them, and the riders of horses shall be confounded.


And when he is made king, he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor lead back the people into Egypt, being lifted up with the number of his horsemen: especially since the Lord hath commanded you to return no more the same way.


If thou go out to war against thy enemies, and see horsemen and chariots, and the numbers of the enemy's army greater than thine, thou shalt not fear them: because the Lord thy God is with thee, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt.
