Yet you say, ‘What does God know? Can he judge through total darkness?


They die suddenly in the middle of the night; people shudder, then pass away. Even the mighty are removed without effort.


But when God is silent, who can declare him guilty? When he hides his face, who can see him? Yet he watches over both individuals and nations,


Look on every proud person and humble him; trample the wicked where they stand.


The Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud  to lead them on their way during the day and in a pillar of fire to give them light at night, so that they could travel day or night.


He caused their chariot wheels to swerve  , and made them drive  with difficulty. ‘Let’s get away from Israel,’ the Egyptians said, ‘because the Lord is fighting for them against Egypt! ’


And if they are driven by their enemies into captivity, from there I will command the sword to kill them. I will keep my eye on them for harm and not for good.


The next day Saul organised the troops into three divisions.  During the morning watch, they invaded the Ammonite camp and slaughtered them until the heat of the day. There were survivors, but they were so scattered that no two of them were left together.
