Now at midnight the Lord struck every firstborn male in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the prisoner who was in the dungeon, and every firstborn of the livestock.


‘However, I know that the king of Egypt will not allow you to go, even under force from a strong hand.


You may redeem the firstborn of a donkey with a sheep, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck.  You must redeem all the firstborn of your sons. No one is to appear before me empty-handed.


I told you: Let my son go so that he may worship me, but you refused to let him go. Look, I am about to kill your firstborn son! ’


The firstborn of every living thing, human or animal, presented to the Lord belongs to you. But you must certainly redeem a human firstborn,  and redeem the firstborn of an unclean animal.
