Abner son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army,  took Saul’s son Ish-bosheth  , and moved him to Mahanaim.


When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab pulled him aside to the middle of the city gate, as if to speak to him privately, and there Joab stabbed him in the stomach. So Abner died in revenge for the death of Asahel,  Joab’s brother.


Then the people who were already in the land  discouraged  the people of Judah and made them afraid  to build.


For they were all trying to intimidate  us, saying, ‘They will drop their hands from  the work,  and it will never be finished.’ But now, my God, strengthen my hands.


Therefore everyone’s hands will become weak, and every man will lose heart.


Strengthen the weak hands, steady the shaking knees!


The king of Babylon has heard about them; his hands have become weak. Distress has seized him – pain, like a woman in labour.


We have heard about it, and our hands have become weak. Distress has seized us – pain, like a woman in labour.


On that day it will be said to Jerusalem: ‘Do not fear; Zion, do not let your hands grow weak.
