Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Joseph left Pharaoh’s presence and travelled throughout the land of Egypt.


How happy are your men.  How happy are these servants of yours, who always stand in your presence hearing your wisdom.


Do you see a person skilled in his work? He will stand in the presence of kings. He will not stand in the presence of the unknown.


Joshua son of Nun, who attends you, will enter it. Encourage him, for he will enable Israel to inherit it.


‘At that time the Lord set apart the tribe of Levi  to carry the ark of the Lord’s covenant, to stand before the Lord to serve him, and to pronounce blessings in his name, as it is today.


He quickly called his armour-bearer and said to him, ‘Draw your sword and kill me, or they’ll say about me, “A woman killed him.” ’ So his armour-bearer ran him through, and he died.


Then Saul sent word to Jesse: ‘Let David remain in my service, for he has found favour with me.’


but David kept going back and forth from Saul  to tend his father’s flock in Bethlehem.


When Saul had seen David going out to confront the Philistine, he asked Abner the commander of the army, ‘Whose son is this youth, Abner? ’ ‘Your Majesty, as surely as you live, I don’t know,’ Abner replied.


So Jonathan summoned David and told him all these words. Then Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he served him as he did before.
