So He lifted up His hand in an oath against them, To make them fall in the wilderness,
“For I am יהוה, I speak. And the word which I speak is done. It is no longer deferred. For in your days, O rebellious house, when I speak the word I shall do it,” declares the Master יהוה.’ ”
And it came to be, when the people were as complainers, it was evil in the ears of יהוה. And יהוה heard it, and His displeasure burned. And the fire of יהוה burned among them, and consumed those in the outskirts of the camp.
And all the children of Yisra’ĕl grumbled against Mosheh and against Aharon, and all the congregation said to them, “If only we had died in the land of Mitsrayim! Or if only we had died in this wilderness!
but truly, as I live and all the earth is filled with the esteem of יהוה,
shall see the land of which I swore to their fathers, nor any of those who scorned Me see it.
And when Mosheh spoke these words to all the children of Yisra’ĕl, the people mourned greatly.
Not one of the men who came up from Mitsrayim, from twenty years old and above, is to see the land of which I swore to Aḇraham, Yitsḥaq, and Ya‛aqoḇ, because they did not follow Me completely,
“And יהוה heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and took an oath, saying,
Not one of these men of this evil generation shall see that good land of which I swore to give to your fathers,
“And the time we took to come from Qaḏĕsh Barnĕa until we passed over the wadi Zereḏ was thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of battle was consumed from the midst of the camp, as יהוה had sworn to them.
“And also, the hand of יהוה was against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp until they were consumed.
For I lift My hand to the heavens, And shall say: As I live forever,
And with whom was He grieved forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness?
