And the king rose in the night and said to his servants, “I will tell you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we are hungry. Jeroboam had sent an ambush around to come upon them from behind. Thus his troops were in front of Judah, and the ambush was behind them.

So all the people who were in the city were called together to pursue them, and as they pursued Joshua they were drawn away from the city.

And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place and set themselves in array at Baal-tamar, and the men of Israel who were in ambush rushed out of their place from Maareh-geba.
So the people of Benjamin saw that they were defeated. The men of Israel gave ground to Benjamin, because they trusted the men in ambush whom they had set against Gibeah.
