Who was Jeduthun in the Bible?

Answer

The name Jeduthun means “praiser” or “one who praises.” It was a fitting name for the Levite called Jeduthun in the Bible, as he served as one of David’s principal musicians (1 Chronicles 16:41-42;2 Chronicles 35:15;Psalm 39:1). Alongside Jeduthun, the Psalms and 1 Chronicles also mention Asaph and Heman as choir directors. Each of these three directors had specific psalms assigned to them, suggesting they specialized in different musical styles. Psalms 39, 62, and 77 were designated for Jeduthun, indicating that his choir or musicians led the congregation in singing these particular songs.

Many scholars believe Jeduthun is the same person as Ethan mentioned in 1 Chronicles 15:17. First Chronicles 25:3 mentions that Jeduthun’s sons—Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah—joined him in playing musical instruments like the harp, cymbals, and lyre. Additionally, Second Chronicles 35:15 refers to Jeduthun as the “king’s seer,” suggesting that he not only led music for David but also delivered God’s messages through prophecy.

Studying individuals like Jeduthun, Asaph, and Heman underscores the importance God places on music. He has bestowed musical talent and passion upon certain individuals, expecting them to utilize these gifts in His service. Jeduthun, for instance, seamlessly integrated the gifts of music and prophecy, serving in both capacities. Even today, God intertwines music and prophecy in our worship. He communicates with us through music, the Psalms, and by inspiring us with “new songs” to sing to Him (Psalm 144:9;Isaiah 43:10). Through musical worship and praise, God draws us in, convicts us, and fills us with inspiration. Whether a psalm was led by Asaph, Heman, or Jeduthun, we can all appreciate the beauty and power of these songs and gain insight.
