What is the open heaven concept?

Answer

The concept of an “open heaven” is gaining popularity among Charismatics today. They seek tangible evidence of heaven on earth and witness periods of God’s presence being poured out over individuals, churches, cities, or nations. These times of “open heaven” are marked by revival, abundant blessings, and displays of God’s glory and power. A portal in heaven is opened, and those beneath it encounter miracles, healings, prosperity, and other blessings.

Supporters of the open heaven doctrine believe that it is a season of favor when divine revelation flows abundantly through God’s apostles and prophets. During these times, believers receive angelic visitations, experience God’s tangible presence, and witness an increase in wealth and financial resources within the church.

Advocates of the open heaven teaching refer to various Bible passages to support their claims of past open heaven seasons. A key verse is Isaiah 64:1: “Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains would tremble before you!” Other passages cited include Ezekiel’s vision in the first chapter of his book, Jesus’ baptism in Matthew 3:16, Jesus’ promise to Nathanael in John 1:51, Stephen’s martyrdom in Acts 7:54–61, John’s vision in Revelation 4, and the account of “Jacob’s ladder” in Genesis 28.

Drawing from these biblical references, some believe that God is once again ushering in seasons of open heavens with increasing frequency. They observe the rise of modern-day apostles, angelic manifestations, the thundering voice of God, and the release of new revelations as God manifests His presence.

The song “Open Heaven” by Maranda Curtis articulates some of the beliefs associated with an “open heaven”: “We are under an open heaven / Where His glory shall be revealed / Where the sin-sick shall be healed / We are under an open heaven / We are under an open heaven / Where His power shall overflow / Where the broken shall be made whole.”

Similarly, the Pentecostal group Hillsong Worship has a song titled “Open Heaven (River Wild)” that discusses signs and wonders, dreams and visions, and an “Open heaven / Crashing over me.” Additionally, there are several Christian books currently bearing “Open Heaven” in their titles.

One of the aims of pursuing an “open heaven” is to experience God more tangibly in our lives as we transition from ritualism to a deeper connection with Him. While this objective is commendable, the open heaven movement, like many movements in the Charismatic sphere, veers away from Scripture as the exclusive source of truth, replacing it with personal experiences, contemporary prophecies, and a craving for the extraordinary.
