Answer
Lent is a period of fasting, moderation, and self-denial traditionally observed by Catholics and some Protestant denominations. It commences with Ash Wednesday and concludes with Easter Sunday. The duration of the Lenten fast was established in the 4th century as 46 days (40 days, excluding Sundays). Throughout Lent, participants consume food sparingly or renounce a specific food or habit. It is not unusual for individuals to give up smoking, refrain from watching television, avoid eating candy, or abstain from telling lies during Lent. It is a six-week period of self-discipline.
Lent originated as a means for Catholics to remind themselves of the importance of repentance. The austerity of the Lenten season was viewed as akin to how individuals in the Old Testament fasted and repented while wearing sackcloth and ashes (Esther 4:1-3;Jeremiah 6:26;Daniel 9:3).
Nevertheless, over time Lenten observances have acquired a more “sacramental” significance. Many Catholics believe that sacrificing something during Lent is a means to receive God’s blessing. However, the Bible teaches that grace cannot be earned; grace is “the gift of righteousness” «For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) », (Romans 5:17). Additionally, Jesus instructed that fasting should be carried out discreetly: “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil.On your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen” (Matthew 6:16-18). Jesus’ command to “wash your face” appears to contradict the practice of applying ashes on one’s face on Ash Wednesday.
Fasting can be beneficial, and God is pleased when we turn away from sinful habits. There is nothing wrong with dedicating time to reflect on Jesus’ death and resurrection. However, turning away from sin is a daily practice, not limited to the 46 days of Lent.
If a Christian chooses to observe Lent, they are free to do so. The focus should be on repenting of sin and dedicating oneself to God. Lent should not involve boasting about sacrifices or attempting to earn God’s favor or increase His love. God’s love for us is already immeasurable.
