Answer
Eschatology is the study of what the Bible says will happen in the end times. Many consider Eschatology a theology area to avoid. While not as crucial as Christology or Soteriology, Eschatology is important for a Biblical worldview. Understanding Eschatology influences how we should live and what to expect in God’s plan. Some key issues in Eschatology include:
What is the Rapture? Although the term “rapture” is not in the Bible, the concept is clearly taught. The Rapture is when God removes all believers from earth for His righteous judgment during the Tribulation.
When will the Rapture happen in relation to the Tribulation? Will it be before, in the middle, or at the end?
What is the Second Coming and its significance? Why is Jesus Christ’s return crucial? When will it happen, and what are the signs?
Is the millennium literal or figurative? Many covenants and promises rely on a literal, physical, future kingdom. There is no solid reason to reject a literal understanding of the Millennial Kingdom lasting 1,000 years.
Will the generation witnessing Israel’s reformation still be alive for the Second Coming? It is not biblical to claim that the generation seeing Israel’s rebirth will witness Jesus Christ’s return. While possible, Scripture does not explicitly state this.
Revelation describes a period of tribulation in chapters 6-18. Will this Tribulation precede or follow the Rapture, or is it interconnected?
Already occurred? These various perspectives have a significant impact on what we should be preparing for. Eschatology assists us in comprehending the prophetic passages of the Bible and how to live our lives in light of what God will do in the end times. While there is much controversy in Eschatology, it does not exempt us from the responsibility to study and grasp what the Bible teaches about the end times. Understanding Eschatology can alleviate many of the fears we harbor about the future. Our God is sovereign, He has a plan, and everything will unfold according to His perfect will and timing. This is a great source of encouragement for those who belong to Christ!
A pivotal verse on Eschatology is Titus 2:13: “we wait for the blessed hope – the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.”
