In the broadest sense, a theist is an individual who believes in at least one god or deity. Theism contrasts with atheism (the rejection of any god’s existence) and agnosticism (the uncertainty regarding the existence of a God or gods). Theism can encompass various worldviews:
Monotheism: A monotheist is someone who believes in a single God. Monotheism is embraced by Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, with each religion holding a unique perspective on God.
Polytheism: A polytheist believes in multiple gods. Followers of the gods in Greco-Roman culture were polytheists. Today, those who acknowledge the numerous gods and goddesses of the spiritual realm are considered polytheists.
Deism: Deists believe in a God (or sometimes gods) who created the universe but does not intervene in it.
Pantheism / Panentheism: Pantheists and panentheists believe that God is everything and everything is God. Panentheism also includes the concept that a god or gods created the material universe.
Autotheism: An autotheist is someone who asserts that they are God or an enlightened being.
According to Scripture, there is one God who created the heavens and the earth “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”, (Genesis 1:1). This teaching is not debated but assumed in the Bible. In fact, Psalm 14:1 states, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” Furthermore, the Old Testament clearly promotes monotheism: “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one” “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:”, (Deuteronomy 6:4). Deuteronomy 4:39 declares, “The Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.”
According toIn the New Testament, God exists as one Triune God comprising God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit «Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: », (Matthew 28:19—“in the name”, singular). All three Persons of the Triune God are also mentioned at Jesus’ baptism, when the voice of God the Father speaks from the sky to Jesus and the Spirit descends like a dove (Matthew 3:16-17).
A Christian is a theist of a particular kind. A Christian is a monotheist who accepts the view of a Triune God and believes in Jesus as the risen Lord «that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. », (Romans 10:9).
