What is a monitoring spirit?

Answer

Among certain Charismatic circles, a “monitoring spirit” is believed to be an evil entity that essentially observes an individual’s actions with the intent of causing harm or suffering in their life. This type of spirit is sometimes referred to as a masquerading spirit or a watcher.

According to adherents of this belief, a monitoring spirit can be dispatched by another demon, a witch, or someone possessing spiritual knowledge. These spirits allegedly surveil your activities, methods, speech, and social connections. Their aim is to gather intelligence to facilitate spiritual assaults, steal blessings, inflict illness, thwart success, and generally create chaos in the victim’s life.

Tools of monitoring are said to include mirrors, brooms, tarot cards, and crystal balls. Allegedly, monitoring spirits can inhabit or manifest as animals such as cats, dogs, black birds, rats, wolves, and insects. These spirits are believed to influence the dreams of their targets, causing recurring themes such as eating, engaging in sexual activities, being pursued by an animal, looking into a mirror, grooming one’s hair, seeing one’s shadow, or observing the moon.

The fundamental question remains: is there biblical validation for the concept of monitoring spirits? The answer is no. The Bible acknowledges the existence of the spiritual realm, encompassing both angelic and demonic beings, and it is conceivable that both angels and demons can observe us to some extent. However, attributing the specific role of “monitoring” to a distinct group of demons exceeds biblical teachings.

Various other “categories” of demons are postulated by certain imaginative individuals within religious contexts: python spirits, Delilah spirits, Jezebel spirits, marine spirits, Leviathans, Kundalini, Ahabs, and more. None of these spiritual entities are explicitly referenced in Scripture, and it is advisable to steer clear of those who insist on propagating such beliefs.Vented menagerie of spiritual adversaries. The Bible states that evil is truly active in this world and that followers are engaged in a struggle “against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” «For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. », (Ephesians 6:12). However, the intricate demonological mythologies proposed by some Charismatics are unproductive and are more related to imagination and sorcery than to the Word of God.
