Entitled “The Last Battle,” this is the concluding chapter in the series “Chronicles of Narnia” by C.S. Lewis. In this tale, a cunning ape and a less intelligent donkey stumble upon the skin of a lion. While the donkey views the skin as a mere oddity, the ape sees a chance for profit. By skillfully sewing the skin onto the donkey, the ape transforms his friend into a likeness of the great Aslan himself. This deception successfully fools the disillusioned creatures of Narnia, as the counterfeit Aslan begins to betray the land and its inhabitants to their enemies.
Lewis was not only a skilled storyteller but also a profound Christian defender who wholeheartedly embraced the prophetic teachings of Scripture. Initially a staunch atheist, this esteemed Oxford professor underwent a transformation after thoroughly studying the Bible, dubbing himself “the most reluctant convert in London.” Among Christian writers, C.S. Lewis is highly regarded and frequently quoted, second only to the inspired authors of Scripture.
Symbolizing the dramatic conclusion of the Antichrist’s oppressive rule, “The Last Battle” portrays the triumphant return of King Jesus to establish His global kingdom in Jerusalem (Revelation 18-22). Lewis skillfully avoids delving into the typical eschatological debates about the timing of the rapture, steering clear of pre-, mid-, and post-tribulation speculations. Instead, he presents a captivating allegory of the Second Coming of our Lord, focusing on the essential elements while maintaining a sense of mystery. The narrative is filled with suspense, intrigue, unexpected twists, and vivid imagery that captivates not only young readers but also adults with restless hearts and minds!
