Answer
At present, Satan is not in hell. Instead, he wanders the earth, looking for individuals to tempt into sin and lead away from God. In 1 Peter 5:8, it is written, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” Jesus referred to Satan as the “prince of this world” in John 14:30, and the apostle Paul described him as the “ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient” «wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: », (Ephesians 2:2). Satan does not dwell in hell; he resides and operates on the earth and in the surrounding heavens.
Satan is known as the “father of lies” «Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. », (John 8:44), and he currently exerts influence and control over the world. Satan craves worship «and saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. », (Matthew 4:9), using deception and distractions to divert humanity’s attention to himself. The world, in one way or another, pays homage to Satan, except for those who belong to the kingdom of God and have been called out of Satan’s deceit. If an individual is not a child of God, they are inherently a child of Satan (see John 8:44;Acts 13:10). First JohIn 3:10, we learn how to differentiate between the two: “This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.” James 4:4 explains that anyone who is a friend of the world is an enemy of God.
Understanding this is crucial because Jesus will soon return to earth to gather what is His. He will conquer the followers of Satan and claim His chosen ones. Ultimately, Satan will be cast into the lake of fire and “tormented day and night forever and ever” «And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. », (Revelation 20:10). Subsequently, Jesus will judge non-believers based on their deeds. Those not listed in the Book of Life will be thrown into the lake of fire where Satan and his followers will be at that time «And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. », (Revelation 20:13,15) «And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.», (Revelation 20:13,15). Additionally, Hell and death will be cast into the lake of fire «And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. », (Revelation 20:14). Therefore, technically speaking, Satan will not reside in hell at any point. Instead, he will be permanently confined to an intensely hot place that could be described as a “hellish” location.
Tormented eternally.
The main lesson for every individual is to make sure that their own name is inscribed in the Book of Life to secure eternal life in heaven, instead of facing eternal alienation from God in the lake of fire.
