The certainty of salvation is, in simple terms, having a firm belief that you are saved. Many Christians throughout history have documented their struggles in being certain of their salvation. The issue lies in the fact that numerous followers of Jesus Christ seek the certainty of salvation in incorrect places.
We often look for assurance of salvation in the works God is manifesting in our lives, in our spiritual development, in the good deeds and adherence to God’s Word that are visible in our Christian journey. While these aspects can serve as indications of salvation, they should not be the foundation of our assurance of salvation. Instead, we should ground our certainty of salvation in the objective truth of God’s Word. We should have unwavering faith that we are saved based on the promises God has proclaimed, not on our subjective encounters.
How can one be certain of salvation? Reflect on 1 John 5:11–13: “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life” (emphasis added). Who possesses the Son? It is those who have put their faith in Him «But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: », (John 1:12). If you have Jesus, you possess life. Not a fleeting life, but an eternal one. And, as stated in 1 John 5:13, you can be certain that you have this eternal life.
God desires us to be certain of our salvation. We should not lead our Christian lives with uncertainty.Wondering and worrying each day about whether we are truly saved can be a common struggle. This is why the Bible presents the plan of salvation so clearly. Have faith in Jesus Christ (John 3:16; Acts 16:31). Do you believe that Jesus died to atone for your sins and was resurrected from the dead (John 3:16; Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21)? Do you rely solely on Him for salvation? If your response to these inquiries is “yes,” then you are saved! Assurance entails being free from doubt. By embracing God’s Word, you can be completely certain about the certainty of your eternal salvation.
Jesus Himself guarantees those who have faith in Him: “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand” (John 10:28-29). Eternal life is precisely that—eternal. No one, not even yourself, can revoke the gift of salvation that Christ has bestowed upon you.
Find joy in the message of God’s Word: instead of doubting, we can live with confidence! We can draw assurance from Christ’s own promises that our salvation will always be secure. Our confidence in salvation is grounded in the flawless and complete redemption that God has granted us through Jesus Christ. Are you placing your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior? If the answer is “yes,” then be assured, you are saved.
