Answer
There are two main ways for Christians to overcome doubts about God. The first is by engaging in Bible reading. Building trust is essential to dispel doubts. However, trusting a stranger or even a casual acquaintance can be challenging. When one experiences salvation and the Holy Spirit dwells in their heart, it marks the beginning of a lifelong journey (and beyond) to deepen the relationship with God. The primary means of understanding God is through reading the Bible. One key aspect that the Bible clearly conveys is that God is faithful, reliable, and benevolent. By immersing ourselves in the accounts of God’s power and love throughout history, we become better equipped to conquer doubt. “Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ” «So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. », (Romans 10:17).
The Bible holds a unique status as it is God-breathed «All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: », (2 Timothy 3:16), indicating that the seemingly ordinary words on its pages are inspired by the Holy Spirit. God’s Word even “judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” «For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. », (Hebrews 4:12). Reading the Bible motivates us «For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. », (Romans 15:4).
(Romans 15:4) satisfies and sustains us. “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4) guides us through life better than any GPS. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, And a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:105). The Bible simultaneously reveals God to us—what He is like, what He loves, and what He hates. The more a believer learns about the person of God, the more their faith will increase—and the less they will doubt.
The second way Christians can stop doubting God is through prayer. Prayer may be the most challenging discipline to develop in a believer’s life, but it is also the most rewarding. Our reading of Scripture should prompt our praying. In Daniel 9:2–3, we read, “I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years. So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes.” In other words, Daniel knew from Scripture that God was going to end Israel’s captivity, and that knowledge spurred him to pray. Why did Daniel pray for what he already knew would happen? Because Daniel knew that God uses the prayers of His people in the working out of His eternal purposes. If God is so benevolent that He would allow us such an important place in His plan for this world, surely we can trust Him to hear our prayers and answer them.
Not only does God hear our prayers, but whatever we ask in accordance with His will shall come to pass (Luke 11:9-13). In the words of Andrew Murray, “Let no delay shake our faith. Of faith iIt holds true: first the blade, then the ear, then the full corn in the ear. Every believing prayer brings us a step closer to the ultimate victory. Each believing prayer aids in maturing the fruit and drawing us nearer to it; it completes the measure of prayer and faith known only to God; it overcomes obstacles in the unseen realm; it speeds up the conclusion.”
Our prayers should be offered daily, in a serene place free from distractions. Keeping a prayer journal is beneficial. You don’t need to jot down every prayer detail, but record some of your requests, and when God responds, note that as well. Before long, you will have a genuine account of how God supernaturally intervenes in the lives of His children through answered prayer. This can greatly assist in dispelling doubt.
God does not desire His people to doubt Him; He desires them to have confidence in His love, vigilance, and protection. Do not hesitate to call upon Him; He has pledged to respond “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” (Jeremiah 33:3)
