Can a Christian consider a career in acting / entertainment?

Response

This question is challenging to address because the entertainment industry encompasses various elements. Contrasts are evident between a theater focusing on classics like Shakespeare’s plays and television programs that sensationalize sex and violence. Both fall under the entertainment sector and involve actors and actresses, yet their impact on performers and audiences differs significantly. Christians contemplating a career in acting or performing need to weigh the spiritual implications of their roles, the lifestyle they will be immersed in, and the influence their performances will exert on others.

For Christian actors/actresses/performers, participating in a film that glorifies sin or the devil’s work is unequivocally unacceptable. Given the struggle actors face in securing roles, they may accept any opportunities that come their way, particularly when starting out. For non-believing actors/actresses, role selection often hinges on its impact on their careers, future opportunities, and financial gain. However, for Christians, the critical consideration is whether the role honors God or at the very least does not promote rebellion against Him through violence, sex, or other immoralities. While lucrative opportunities may lie in ungodly roles due to the devil’s pervasive influence in today’s world, Christian actors should refrain from roles that advance Satan’s agenda. The guiding principle is articulated in 1 Corinthians 10:31: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

Furthermore, the lifestyle adopted by performers in the industry warrants contemplation for Christians. The entertainment sector is rife with substance abuse, alcoholism, and immoral conduct. Aspiring individuals seeking their “big break” are often exploited and mistreated by those in positions of power. While it may be feasible for some to navigate these challenges, it is crucial for Christians to prioritize their spiritual well-being and integrity over fleeting worldly success. For a Christian to be in this world and not be affected by it, 1 Corinthians 15:33 warns us, “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’” It would be foolish to ignore that warning.

Finally, the impact performers have on others must be considered. When unbelievers see professing Christians in movies, TV shows, or live performances that promote ungodliness, they sense the hypocrisy and are given cause to “blaspheme the name of God” «For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written. », (Romans 2:24). There is also a detrimental effect on the faith of other believers, especially young people and those immature in the faith. Anytime a young believer can justify ungodliness by saying, “Well, so-and-so does it and he’s a Christian,” the cause of Christ suffers, and the young person is drawn away from truth into sin. Jesus spoke harshly of those who cause “one of these little ones who believe in me to sin” «But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. », (Matthew 18:6).

Ultimately, the decision to enter into a career in acting or entertainment must be made prayerfully, seeking God’s wisdom «If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. », (James 1:5) and the counsel of mature Christians, remembering always that “everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness” «Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. », 2 Timothy 2:19.
