Zumba is a popular fitness and dance program that takes place in gyms, community centers, and even some churches. How should a Christian respond to Zumba? Should we take part?
First, it is important to recognize that exercise is beneficial to the body (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). There is nothing wrong with exercise programs themselves, and the Bible promotes fitness. God designed the body to move, so engage in physical activity. Find a form of exercise you enjoy and then responsibly care for the body God has given you.
Second, be aware that there are various types of Zumba classes, including different levels based on age and intensity. These fitness classes are meant to be led by certified Zumba instructors. These instructors have varying standards, so Zumba classes can differ significantly depending on the instructor.
Third, consider the following cautions:
• Be cautious of inappropriate sensuality – Zumba instructors choreograph their sessions. Some of the movements they teach may be sensual or sexually suggestive. Any form of dancing that incites lustful, sinful desires should be avoided.
• Consider the musical influence – Zumba instructors choose the music playlists for their classes, so musical selections vary widely based on the instructor. Research and ask questions. Lyrics that disrespect God or provoke sinful thoughts should be avoided.
