How does the fact that there are gay/homosexual animals impact the idea that homosexuality is a sin?

Answer

Simply put, the fact that some animals exhibit what could be described as homosexual behavior does not alter the reality that homosexuality is considered a sin for human beings. While some animals may consume their offspring, it is not acceptable for humans to engage in cannibalism. Dogs consuming their own vomit «As a dog returneth to his vomit, So a fool returneth to his folly. », (Proverbs 26:11), is not behavior that we should imitate. Certain insects may consume their mates after mating. We should not look to animal behavior as a moral standard or as a justification for our actions.

It is a fact that instances of “homosexual” behavior have been observed in various species within the animal kingdom. The causes of such behavior are still under investigation, with theories including the establishment of social dominance, displays of aggression, and conflict avoidance. Other cases of “homosexuality” in animals may be due to confusion caused by scent or physical abnormalities. Nevertheless, it is uncommon to find animals displaying prolonged homosexual behavior. Homosexual behavior in animals is considered atypical across species. (See Shlemon, Alan, “Does Homosexual Behavior in Animals Mean It’s Natural for Humans?” pub. 3/8/2012, www.str.org/w/does-homosexual-behavior-in-animals-mean-it-s-natural-for-humans-, accessed 7/28/2021.)

“Homosexuality” among animals in nature is not a conscious lifestyle choice. Animals do not operate within a moral framework and do not commit “sins.” However, humans are distinct from animals. Men and women were created in the image of God «So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. », (Genesis 1:27). This distinction sets humans apart from other creatures in creation. Animals are not held accountable for their actions.Ble to God for their actions. Men and women are. Because animals were not made in the image of God, we cannot look at them as examples of how to live our lives.

The Bible is clear that homosexuality is a sin (1 Corinthians 6:9-10). Animals are not going to be condemned by God because of their actions. But sinful humans will be (Romans 3:23; John 1:8). Animals do not have a conscience or an innate knowledge of right and wrong. Humans do. Animals do not have the ability to make moral choices, for they function primarily on a survival instinct.

The fact that some people appeal to the animal kingdom to justify their iniquity is telling. Such appeals deride humanity and dishonor God, who has made us in His image and likeness. Animal behavior does not alter the Word we have received or the nature of God who defines good and evil.
