Ietsism (literally “something-ism”) is the belief that there is “something” that exists beyond the material realm, but that “something” remains undefined and unknowable. Because ietsism is another form of agnosticism, it is not compatible with the Christian faith. Ietsists do not adhere to any single set of beliefs entirely. They believe in a spiritual realm and acknowledge that there could be some form of deity. They even entertain the idea that we ourselves might be divine, as Eastern philosophy suggests. However, ietsists refrain from claiming absolute knowledge regarding anything spiritual.

Many individuals value and respect Christianity and may attend church services or apply certain Christian principles as a means of spiritual connection. Nevertheless, this does not classify them as Christians. Some ietsists fall into this category. They may identify as Christians for cultural reasons, but they do not adhere to the core tenets of the Christian faith.

Ietsism does not align with any specific belief system. A Christian must have a clear understanding of their beliefs. Genuine faith is cultivated through hearing and comprehending the Word of God, as stated in Romans 10:17, (Romans 10:17). To embrace Christianity, one must possess sincere faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God and Savior. Merely believing in a vague “something” or being “reasonably certain” that “perhaps” a god exists is insufficient. Hebrews 4:14 emphasizes, “Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.” The solidity of our faith leaves no room for ambiguity or uncertainty.

Another characteristic of ietsism that sets it apart from biblical Christianity is its acceptance of all forms of spirituality. Ietsists can engage in astrology, crystal healing, and occult phenomena and still be considered good ietsists. The Bible clearly teaches that to reach God, we must go through Jesus Christ. He is the only way (John 14:6; Acts 4:12).
