Witnessing to Catholics—what is the key?

Answer

To understand how to effectively share the gospel with Catholics, it is important to be aware of some of the reasons why Catholics may be hesitant to embrace the concept of being “born again.”

Catholics are often taught from a young age, and a mental barrier against biblical truths is carefully constructed. They are instructed that anything originating from Rome holds higher authority than the Bible itself. The mindset cultivated is one that believes, “If the Pope affirms it, then it must be true.” Regrettably, critical thinking is not encouraged among Catholics, and many may not fully comprehend the basis of their beliefs. A significant number of Catholics may have limited familiarity with the contents of the Bible, beyond the few passages recited during Mass.

Moreover, due to human nature, individuals tend to instinctively resist any challenge to their established belief systems. Engaging in apologetic debates often leads Catholics to become defensive and build emotional barriers. Directly attacking the perceived errors in Catholic doctrine is counterproductive; Catholics are forewarned to anticipate such criticisms from “Protestants,” and as a result, many are either mentally prepared for confrontation or opt to disengage from further dialogue. Therefore, in general, confronting a Catholic acquaintance with the discrepancies in their church’s teachings is unlikely to yield positive results. It is typically more effective to gently guide them towards the Scriptures and emphasize its authority as the Word of God. One should never underestimate the transformative power of God’s Word in touching a person’s heart, as stated in (Hebrews 4:12): “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

The simplicity of the gospel message is what resonates most with Catholics. This simplicity is the key to effectively sharing the message with them. In various ways, the Catholic Church creates a barrier between individuals and God, suggesting that access to God is only possible through intermediaries such as priests and saints, and even then, under specific conditions.Proper prayers, penance, and piety are essential. The Bible teaches us about “the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ” «But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. », (2 Corinthians 11:3, NASB). Jesus extends the invitation to all: “Let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life” «And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. », (Revelation 22:17). “Whoever has the Son has life” «He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. », (1 John 5:12). This simplicity is appealing to those struggling under a merit-based religious system.

Reaching the heart of a Catholic is a gradual process. The armor they wear must be chinked, piece by piece, as doubts arise in their minds about their teachings. The goal is to “draw them out” and prompt them to question their faith. Catholics need to be “spiritually thirsty” to seek valid answers. When questions arise, we should be ready to respond with biblical answers. It’s tempting to simply criticize their beliefs, but that could close the door to further witnessing. A Catholic needs to discover the truth on their own.

It goes without saying that those who witness to Catholics must be rooted in the Word and prayerful. We should be compassionate, not antagonistic, and allow the Holy Spirit to lead us. Our prayer should be: “Lord, You know this person’s heart and intentions. Give me the words they need to hear.”

As an encouragement, here is a

Testimony from a former Catholic: “I remember what spoke to me was initially hearing the Word multiple times and then the incredible realization that I could have a personal relationship with the Lord. As I continued to read the Word, all the other Catholic doctrines that were incorrect gradually faded away after I experienced spiritual rebirth.”
