What happens after death?

Within the Christian faith, there is a significant amount of confusion regarding what occurs after death. Some believe that after death, everyone remains in a state of “sleep” until the final judgment, at which point they will be directed to either heaven or hell. Others argue that individuals are immediately judged and sent to their eternal destinations upon death. Still, some assert that when individuals pass away, their souls/spirits go to a “temporary” heaven or hell to await the final resurrection, the ultimate judgment, and the determination of their eternal fate. So, what does the Bible specifically state about what happens after death?
