Answer
An effective testimony is one that shares your personal experience along with the Gospel of Christ, providing others with insight into the salvation process.
(1) Begin by documenting how you came to have faith in Christ for salvation. Consider the following questions: a) Who introduced me to Christ? b) What events led to my decision to trust in Christ? c) When did I make that decision? d) Where was I when I first believed? e) In what ways has faith in Christ enriched my life?
(2) Then, craft your narrative in a coherent manner. Aim for brevity, ensuring that your testimony can be shared effectively in three minutes or less.
(3) Ensure that your testimony includes relevant Scriptures. Remember, the authority lies in the Scriptures as they are the Word of God. For instance, your testimony should include the realization of being separated from God due to sin «for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; », (Romans 3:23), the understanding of facing eternal separation from God without forgiveness «For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.», (Romans 6:23), the acknowledgment of God sending His perfect Son, Jesus, to atone for your sins «But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. », (Romans 5:8), and finally, receiving forgiveness by solely trusting in Christ’s sacrifice for sin «And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. », (Acts 16:31).
As an example, below is my testimony of how I came to trust in Christ as my Savior.
As a child and teenager, I had conversations with a pastor three or four times about how to attain salvation. However, I did not fully grasp the Gospel of Christ until I was a young adult in my mid-20s. Over a few years, I started reading the Bible, listening to a couple of conservative Bible teachers on television, and discussing what I learned with Christians at work. Through this, I realized that I was a sinner separated from God and deserving eternal separation from Him. This realization was based on Romans 3:23, which states that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” and Romans 6:23, which says “the wages of sin is death.” I also comprehended that God’s love for me was so immense that He sent His Son Jesus to earth to die for my sins (and the sins of the entire world) so that I could be forgiven (Romans 5:8;John 3:16).
Ultimately, I understood that no amount of good deeds or efforts could earn my way to heaven. Romans 3:10 affirms that no one is truly good, and Ephesians 2:8-10 proclaims that salvation is a gift from God, not a reward earned through works, and it is received solely by faith, which means trusting completely in the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ as the payment for my sins. Upon grasping these truths from Scripture, I felt assured that since I could not earn my salvation, I could not lose it either, as it is a divine gift.
Experiencing the relief of being forgiven and knowing that God was on my side, desiring what is best for me, was profound. Since I began my journey with Christ, He has continued to sanctify me through His Word and His work in my life, empowered by the Holy Spirit residing in my heart. This forgiveness and ongoing transformation are truly a testament to God’s grace and love.
And the security that I have from God can be yours as well if you trust Christ alone for the forgiveness of your sins.
