What should you do if you lack wisdom (James 1:5)?

Answer

Wisdom is essential for Christian living, a treasure more precious than gold and silver. “How much better is it to acquire wisdom than gold! And to gain understanding rather than silver!” (Proverbs 16:16). Followers of Jesus are urged to seek wisdom, obtain knowledge, and achieve proper understanding. The entire book of Proverbs is devoted to this pursuit. However, what should we do if we lack this attribute of wisdom?

James 1:5 offers a solution, especially in times of trials—although the principle applies to everyday decision-making: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

According to James 1:5, the wisdom we require (and sometimes lack) comes from God. This differs from natural wisdom, which originates solely from human comprehension and worldly viewpoints. The latter often serves to fulfill human desires at the expense of divine truth. In James 3:13–17, the apostle contrasts the two kinds of wisdom:

Who among you is wise and understanding? Let them demonstrate it through a good life, by actions performed with the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come from above but is earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will be disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from above is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.
