What are angel numbers?

Answer

It is not uncommon to see the same numbers multiple times over a few weeks or even years. These repeated numbers may appear in the time of day, common digits on license plates, or the date of a birthday.

New Age observers believe that recurring numbers are not random; instead, they are messages from angels or spirit guides. They suggest that these guides prompt you to look up at the right moment to see these numbers. New Agers also offer interpretations of what these numbers might signify.

There are several issues with believing in angel numbers:

• “Spirit guides” are not protective, benevolent angels. If they do exist, they are actually disguised demons trying to lead us astray. The Bible expressly prohibits interacting with demonic guides «A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them.», (Leviticus 20:27). James 4:7 instructs us to resist such beings, not to trust and follow them.

• Numerology is an occult practice that lacks biblical support and has no place in the Christian faith. While the Bible uses numbers like 7 and 40 symbolically, it does not imply that every number carries a hidden significance. Numerology is a type of fortune-telling, which the Bible strongly condemns (Leviticus 19:31;Deuteronomy 18:10-13;Galatians 5:19-20).

• God communicates with us through His Word, not through the display of our alarm clock. He has given us the Bible to provide all we need to understand Him (2 Timothy 3:16-17) and wise counselors can assist us in applying the teachings of the Bible to our lives “Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.”, (1 Corinthians 11:1). Nowhere in the Bible does it imply that God communicates through hidden numerical meanings outside of the Scriptures.

• Observing recurring numbers does not indicate that an angel is attempting to capture our attention—or a demon, for that matter. It typically suggests that we have simply taken note of the number and become more attuned to it. Similar to when you purchase a new car and suddenly begin noticing “your” car everywhere, our minds naturally recognize what we are familiar with. This is one reason why consistent Bible study is crucial (Psalm 119).

So, what should we do when we encounter the same number repeatedly? Consider praying. If the number brings a specific person to mind, pray for that individual. If the number appears on a license plate, pray for the driver. Alternatively, offer gratitude to God for shielding us from Satan and evil spirits. Thank Him for providing us with His Word as the ultimate message we require. And praise Him for enabling us to “approach God’s throne of grace with confidence” “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”, (Hebrews 4:16), rather than seeking intermediaries like angels.
