In Brazil, the state of Rio Grande do Sul has been struck by the worst climate disaster in its history due to an intense storm. Authorities have reported that the current death toll stands at 29, but it is expected to increase in the coming hours.

Governor Eduardo Leite expressed his sorrow for the deaths and highlighted that there are still many missing persons who have not been accounted for following landslides and floods in remote areas over the past two days. The number of missing persons is currently at 60.
“I deeply regret all the lives lost, with 29 deaths recorded and with the deepest pain in my heart, I know there will be even more,” said Eduardo Leite, the state governor, during a live broadcast.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva promised that all necessary resources will be allocated to help alleviate the suffering caused by this extreme natural event in the state.
“The federal government will be 100 percent available to the state” for rescue and repair efforts, added Lula alongside Leite, upon arriving with a ministerial delegation in the town of Santa Maria, one of the areas affected by the heavy rains.
Raúl Metzel and Claudio Oliveira, residents of Capela de Santana, expressed their distress and concern over the floods caused by the intense rains in Rio Grande do Sul. Metzel lamented the devastation caused by the water and fears the situation will worsen, while Oliveira feels powerless to help his family in Montenegro due to the adverse conditions.
The state has been declared in a state of public calamity due to the severe storms that have affected the region over the past week.
The intense rains have wreaked havoc in 147 municipalities, leaving 12 injured and affecting 67,860 people, with around 10,000 individuals evacuated and a risk of river and stream overflows. A dam in Cotipora partially broke.
Although it is anticipated not to be total devastation, the level of the Taquari river will rise due to the volume of water. The federal government has made aircraft, vehicles, boats, and personnel from the Armed Forces available to assist the affected population and distribute food and water.
The heavy rains are expected to continue until Friday, with forecasts of strong winds, thunderstorms, and rainfall exceeding 200 mm.
Damages to roads, power outages, water supply disruptions, and the suspension of classes and sports events in the state have been reported, caused by extreme weather phenomena related to climate change.
