Israel adds another historical finding with the discovery of some mosaics that could be from the legendary Church of the Apostles, which is located on the shores of the Sea of Galilee.

The Kinneret Institute of Galilean Archeology at Kinneret College and Nyack College in New York have been working in this area since 2016, by 2019 they discovered a large basilica measuring 27 by 16 meters with a wall that surrounded it.
Inside that basilica, they were recently able to identify some unearthed mosaics with two inscriptions that mentions the name of a deacon, the building plan, and a bishop.
“While the smallest inscription mentions the name of a deacon and the building plan, the largest inscription is a half medallion and speaks of the bishop and the reconstruction of the building,” said Professor Mordechai Aviam, who directs the excavations.
Based on the experience they have on the different types of art in the churches of that time, archaeologists and experts assure that these pieces are distinctive from the Byzantine temples, which could be related to a place mentioned by a Bavarian bishop named Willibald in 725 AD. C.
So far, archaeologists do not know why the construction would be behind a wall without doors; rumors around the building suggest that this wall, which does not exceed a meter in height, was placed there to protect the remains of the church after a strong earthquake.
Another version indicates that during the Middle Ages, a sugar factory was built on what was the church and the wall without doors would have been its basement.
The researchers’ plans indicate that the excavations will continue next year and the remains of the basilica will be unearthed in order to answer many questions that surround it.
However, the rumor that calls most people’s attention is that this church could be the church of the Apostles, which was built on the old house of Peter and Andrew, disciples of Jesus; which is in Bethsaida, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee.
This biblical construction has been sought for centuries by different researchers.
