They spoke against God, saying, “Can God spread a table in the wilderness?


The people quarreled with Moses, and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?”


Happier were those pierced by the sword than those pierced by hunger, whose life drains away, deprived of the produce of the field.


Now when the people complained in the hearing of the Lord about their misfortunes, the Lord heard it and his anger was kindled. Then the fire of the Lord burned against them, and consumed some outlying parts of the camp.


Why is the Lord bringing us into this land to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become booty; would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?”


Those who died by the plague were fourteen thousand seven hundred, besides those who died in the affair of Korah.
