But he said to him, “I will not go, but I will go back to my own land and to my kindred.”


He said, “Yes, he does.” And when he came home, Jesus spoke of it first, asking, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tribute? From their children or from others?”


“For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.


So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.


He answered, ‘I will not’; but later he changed his mind and went.


“Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenants and went to another country.


Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?”


It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch.


Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them—do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem?


I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.


Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
