Now the wife of a member of the company of prophets cried to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead; and you know that your servant feared the Lord, but a creditor has come to take my two children as slaves.”


She came and told the man of God, and he said, “Go sell the oil and pay your debts, and you and your children can live on the rest.”


After thinking it over, I brought charges against the nobles and the officials; I said to them, “You are all taking interest from your own people.” And I called a great assembly to deal with them,


who do not lend money at interest, and do not take a bribe against the innocent. Those who do these things shall never be moved.


One who augments wealth by exorbitant interest gathers it for another who is kind to the poor.


Woe is me, my mother, that you ever bore me, a man of strife and contention to the whole land! I have not lent, nor have I borrowed, yet all of them curse me.


takes advance or accrued interest; shall he then live? He shall not. He has done all these abominable things; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon himself.


withholds his hand from iniquity, takes no advance or accrued interest, observes my ordinances, and follows my statutes; he shall not die for his father's iniquity; he shall surely live.

Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest.


Why then did you not put my money into the bank? Then when I returned, I could have collected it with interest.’


If there is among you anyone in need, a member of your community in any of your towns within the land that the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward your needy neighbor.


You shall give the pledge back by sunset, so that your neighbor may sleep in the cloak and bless you; and it will be to your credit before the Lord your God.
