When you come into the land of Canaan, which I give you for a possession, and I put a leprous disease in a house in the land of your possession,


You shall take possession of the land and settle in it, for I have given you the land to possess.


When you cross the Jordan to go in to occupy the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and when you occupy it and live in it,


When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you must not learn to imitate the abhorrent practices of those nations.


When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it,


and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey.


When the Lord your God brings you into the land that you are about to enter and occupy, and he clears away many nations before you—the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations mightier and more numerous than you—


“Remember the word that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, saying, ‘The Lord your God is providing you a place of rest, and will give you this land.’


Thus the Lord gave to Israel all the land that he swore to their ancestors that he would give them; and having taken possession of it, they settled there.


But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses; and you have said, ‘No! but set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your clans.”


Samuel told the people the rights and duties of the kingship; and he wrote them in a book and laid it up before the Lord. Then Samuel sent all the people back to their homes.


All the people said to Samuel, “Pray to the Lord your God for your servants, so that we may not die; for we have added to all our sins the evil of demanding a king for ourselves.”


Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you.”


He said, “These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen, and to run before his chariots;
