And the anger of the Lord was again kindled against Israel, and stirred up David among them, saying: Go, number Israel and Juda.


But if you and your children revolting shall turn away from following me, and will not keep my commandments, and my ceremonies, which I have set before you, but will go and worship strange gods, and adore them:


Even from that time when Israel was rent from the house of David, and made Jeroboam son of Nabat their king. For Jeroboam separated Israel from the Lord, and made them commit a great sin.


And Satan rose up against Israel: and moved David to number Israel.


So the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel. And there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.


And after he revolted from the Lord, they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem. And he fled into Lachis; and they sent, and killed him there.


And Josias took away all the abominations out of all the countries of the children of Israel: and made all that were left in Israel to serve the Lord their God. As long as he lived they departed not from the Lord the God of their fathers.


And Moses said to Aaron, and to Eleazar and Ithamar, his sons: Uncover not your heads, and rend not your garments, lest perhaps you die, and indignation come upon all the congregation. Let your brethren, and all the house of Israel, bewail the burning which the Lord has kindled.


They fell flat on their face, and said: O most mighty, the God of the spirits of all flesh, for one man's sin shall thy wrath rage against all?


For if you will not follow him he will leave the people in the wilderness: and you shall be the cause of the destruction of all.


For she will turn away thy son from following me, that he may rather serve strange gods: and the wrath of the Lord will be kindled, and will quickly destroy thee.


Who came to the children of Ruben, and of Gad, and the half tribe of Manasses, into the land of Galaad, and said to them:


Thus saith all the people of the Lord: What meaneth this transgression? Why have you forsaken the Lord the God of Israel, building a sacrilegious altar, and revolting from the worship of him?


Did not Achan the son of Zare transgress the commandment of the Lord, and his wrath lay upon all the people of Israel? And he was but one man, and would to God he alone had perished in his wickedness!


But the children of Israel transgressed the commandment, and took to their own use of the anathema. For Achan the son of Charmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zare of the tribe of Juda, took something of the anathema. And the Lord was angry against the children of Israel.


Israel hath sinned, and transgressed my covenant: and they have taken of the anathema, and have stolen and lied, and have hidden it among their goods.


For I saw among the spoils a scarlet garment exceeding good, and two hundred sicles of silver, and a golden rule of fifty sicles. And I coveted them, and I took them away, and hid them in the ground is the midst of my tent: and the silver I covered with the earth that I dug up.


If you will fear the Lord, and serve him, and hearken to his voice, and not provoke the mouth of the Lord: then shall both you, and the king who reigneth over you, be followers of the Lord your God.


And Samuel said to the people: Fear not. You have done all this evil: but yet depart not from following the Lord; but serve the Lord with all your heart.
