David divided them into divisions according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.


The Kohathites set forward, bearing the sanctuary. The others set up the tabernacle before they arrived.


“When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the furniture of the sanctuary, and when the camp moves forward, then the sons of Kohath are to come to carry it. But they must not touch the sanctuary or they till they die. The sons of Kohath are to carry these things belonging to the Tent of Meeting.


Y’all are to do this to them so that they may live and not die when they approach the most holy things: Aaron and his sons are to go in and appoint everyone to his service and to his burden,


“This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and in bearing burdens:


from thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old, all who enter into the service to do the work in the Tent of Meeting.


You are to count the men from thirty to fifty years old—everyone who enters on the service, to do the work of the Tent of Meeting.


When the camp moves forward, Aaron and his sons to are go in and take down the veil of the screen, cover the ark of the Testimony with it,


But to the sons of Kohath he gave none, because the service of the sanctuary belonged to them; they carried it on their shoulders.


“It is like a man traveling to another country, having left his house and given authority to his slaves, each assigned their work, and commanded the doorkeeper to keep watch.
