The king went up to the house of YHWH, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him—with the priests, the prophets, and all the people, both small and great; and he read in their hearing all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of YHWH.


Hilkiah answered Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the book of the law in the house of YHWH.” So Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.


The king went up to the house of YHWH with all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem—the priests, the Levites, and all the people, both great and small—and he read in their hearing all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of YHWH.


Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah,


For Ezra had set his heart to seek YHWH’s law, and to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel.


Now this is the copy of the letter that King Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest, the scribe, even the scribe of the words of YHWH’s commandments, and of his statutes to Israel:


this Ezra went up from Babylon. He was a skilled scribe in the law of Moses, which YHWH, the God of Israel, had given; and the king granted him all his request, according to YHWH his God’s hand on him.


These were in the days of Joiakim the son of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and in the days of Nehemiah the governor, and of Ezra the priest and scribe.


By the spring gate, and straight before them, they went up by the stairs of David’s city, at the ascent of the wall, above David’s house, even to the water gate eastward.


(Now the temple servants lived in Ophel, to the place opposite the water gate toward the east, and the tower that stands out.)


So the people went out and brought them, and made themselves temporary shelters, everyone on the roof of his house, in their courts, in the courts of God’s house, in the wide place of the water gate, and in the wide place of Ephraim’s gate.


He read from it before the wide place that was in front of the water gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women, and of those who could understand. The ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law.


Turn to the law and to the covenant! If they don’t speak according to this word, surely there is no morning for them.


They brought what Moses commanded before the Tent of Meeting. All the congregation came near and stood before YHWH.


“Y’all must remember the law of Moses my servant, even statutes and ordinances, which I gave to him in Horeb for all Israel.


He said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been made a disciple in the Empire of Heaven is like a human owner of a house, who brings out of their treasure new and old things.”


“Woe to y’all, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Y’all keep shutting humans out of the Empire of Heaven. For y’all do not enter it, but neither to do allow others to enter.


“The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in Moses’ chair.


Therefore, I am sending y’all prophets, wise men, and scribes. Some of them y’all will kill and crucify; and some of them y’all will flog in your* synagogues and persecute from city to city,


when all Israel has come to appear before YHWH your God in the place which he will choose, you are to read this law before all Israel in their hearing.


Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was assembled as one man, from Dan even to Beersheba, with the land of Gilead, to YHWH at Mizpah.


All the people arose as one man, saying, “None of us will go to his tent, neither will any of us turn to his house.
