The king called the Gibeonites and said to them (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites. The children of Israel had sworn to them, but Saul sought to kill them in his zeal for the children of Israel and Judah).


You must no make any covenant with them or with their gods.


Now when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had completely destroyed it (as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king), and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them,


“Y’all come up and help me. Let’s attack Gibeon, because they have made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.”


There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, except the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. They took all in battle.


Three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were their neighbors and that they lived near them.
