As the king passed by, he cried to the king, and he said, “Your servant went out into the middle of the battle. Suddenly, a man came over and brought a man to me, and said, ‘Guard this man! If by any he is missing-missing, then your life will be for his life, or else you will pay a talent of silver.’


As your servant was busy here and there, he was gone.” The king of Israel said to him, “So will your judgment be. You yourself have decided it.”


He said to him, “YHWH says, ‘Because you have let go out of your hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore your life will take the place of his life, and your people take the place of his people.’”


The man of God was angry with him, and said, “You should have struck five or six times. Then you would have struck Syria until you had consumed it, but now you will strike Syria just three times.”


and say to them, YHWH, the God of Israel says: ‘Cursed is the man who doesn’t obey the words of this covenant,


“‘You sword of YHWH, how long will it be before you are quiet? Put yourself back into your scabbard; rest, and be still.’


“How can you be quiet, since YHWH has given you a command? Against Ashkelon, and against the seashore, there he has appointed it.”


YHWH has opened his armory, and has brought out the weapons of his indignation; for the Lord, YHWH Almighty, has a work to do in the land of the Chaldeans.


Y’all are to kill all her bulls. Let them go down to the slaughter. Woe to them! For their day has come, the time of their visitation.


But don’t stay there. Y’all are to chase y’all’s enemies and attack them from the rear. Y’all must not allow them to enter into their cities, for YHWH y’all’s God has delivered them into y’all’s hand.”


‘Y’all curse Meroz,’ said the Angel of YHWH. ‘Y’all curse its inhabitants bitterly, because they didn’t come to help YHWH, to help YHWH against the mighty.’


Now go and strike Amalek. Y’all are to totally destroy all that they have. Don’t spare them, but kill both man and woman, infant and nursing baby, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”


But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, of the cattle, of the fat calves, of the lambs, and all that was good, and were not willing to utterly destroy them; but everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.
