Moreover the altar that was at Bethel and the high place which Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, had made, even that altar and the high place he broke down; and he burned the high place and beat it to dust, and burned the Asherah.


All the houses also of the high places that were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made to provoke YHWH to anger, Josiah took away, and did to them according to all the acts that he had done in Bethel.


“Now y’all intend to resist the kingdom of YHWH, which is in the hand of the sons of David. Y’all are a vast number, and have with y’all the golden calves which Jeroboam made y’all for as gods.


Now when all this was finished, all Israel who were present went out to the cities of Judah and broke the pillars in pieces, cut down the Asherah poles, and broke down the high places and the altars out of all Judah and Benjamin, also in Ephraim and Manasseh, until they had destroyed them all. Then all the children of Israel returned, every man to his possession, into their own cities.


Everyone has become brutish and without knowledge. Every goldsmith is shamed by his idol; for his molten image is deceitful, and there is no breath in them.


Moab will be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, their confidence.


“Y’all are to announce and proclaim among the nations, lifting up a banner, proclaiming and not concealing; Y’all are to say, ‘Babylon has been taken, Bel is disappointed, Merodach is dismayed! Her images are disappointed. Her idols are dismayed.’


Their heart is divided. Now they will be found guilty. He will demolish their altars. He will destroy their sacred stones.


Now they sin more and more, and have made themselves molten images of their silver, even idols according to their own understanding, all of them the work of the craftsmen. They say of them, ‘They offer human sacrifice and kiss the calves.’


Assyria can’t save us. We won’t ride on horses; neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, ‘Our gods!’ for in you the fatherless finds mercy.”


All her idols will be smashed to pieces, all her temple gifts will be burned with fire, and I will destroy all her images; for of the hire of a prostitute has she gathered them, and to the hire of a prostitute will they return.”


“What value does the idol have, that its maker has engraved it? It is a molten image, a teacher of lies. The one fashions its form trusts in idols that cannot speak.


Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we shouldn’t think that the divine nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by human skill and imagination.


And y’all see and hear that this Paul has convinced and turned many people, not just here in Ephesus, but almost all throughout Asia. He says that gods that made with human hands are not gods.
