He said to them, “No, but y’all have come to see the vulnerable parts of our land!”


Joseph said to them, “It is like I told y’all, saying, ‘Y’all are spies!’


Y’all must send one of y’all to get y’all’s brother, while y’all remain bound, so that y’all’s words may be tested, whether there is truth in y’all. But if not, by the life of Pharaoh surely y’all are spies.”


Y’all bring y’all’s youngest brother to me, and then y’all’s words be verified, and y’all won’t die.” They did so.


“The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly with us, and took us for spies of the country.


Y’all must bring y’all’s youngest brother to me. Then I will know that y’all are not spies, and that y’all are honest men. So I will deliver y’all’s brother back to y’all, and y’all will be allowed to trade in the land.’”


When Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but made sure he was unrecognizable to them, and spoke roughly with them. He said to them, “Where did y’all come from?” They said, “From the land of Canaan, to buy food.”


Judah spoke to him, saying, “The man warned-warned us, saying, ‘Y’all will not see my face, unless y’all’s brother is with y’all.’


but if you don’t send him, we won’t go down, for the man said to us, ‘Y’all will not see my face, unless y’all’s brother is with y’all.’”


Though they say, ‘As YHWH lives,’ surely they swear falsely.”


“How can I pardon you? Your children have forsaken me, and sworn by what are no gods. When I had fed them to the full, they committed adultery, and assembled themselves in troops at the prostitutes’ houses.


You are to fear YHWH your God, serve ʜɪᴍ, and swear by ʜɪꜱ name.


But above all things, my siblings, y’all must not swear—not by heaven or by the earth or by any other oath. Instead let y’all’s “yes” mean “yes,” and y’all’s “no” mean “no,” so that y’all won’t fall into judgment.
