Abraham said to God, “Oh that Ishmael might live before you!”


God said to Abraham, “Don’t let it be grievous in your sight because of the boy, and because of your servant. In all that Sarah says to you, listen to her voice. For your offspring will be named through Isaac.


The king was much moved, and went up to the room over the gate and wept. As he went, he said, “My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! I wish I had died instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son!”


Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me isn’t worthy of me.


Certainly, all discipline seems painful at the time, not joyful. But later it produces the peaceful fruit of righteousness for those who have been trained by it.
