After this, Amnon the son of David fell in love with Tamar, the beautiful sister of Absalom the son of David.


So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.


The king said, “Let him return to his own house, but let him not see my face.” So Absalom returned to his own house, and didn’t see the king’s face.


Absalom answered Joab, “Look, I sent to you, saying, ‘Come here, that I may send you to the king, to say, “Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me to be there still. Now therefore, let me see the king’s face; and if there is iniquity in me, let him kill me.”’”


At the end of forty years, Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to YHWH, in Hebron.


For your servant vowed a vow while I stayed at Geshur in Syria, saying, ‘If YHWH will bring-bring me again to Jerusalem, then I will serve YHWH.’”


The king was much moved, and went up to the room over the gate and wept. As he went, he said, “My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! I wish I had died instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son!”


So David went up there with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.


His father had never corrected him by saying, “Why have you done so?” He was also a very handsome man, and he was born after Absalom.


He said, “You know that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should be king. However, the kingdom is turned over to my brother, and came to him from YHWH.


Now these were the sons of David, who were born to him in Hebron: the firstborn, Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; the second, Daniel, by Abigail of Carmel;


the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith;


Jair the son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob, to the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called them, even Bashan, after his own name, Havvoth Jair, to this day.)


Nevertheless the children of Israel didn’t drive out the Geshurites, nor the Maacathites: but Geshur and Maacath live within Israel to this day.


Now the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. This woman was intelligent and had a beautiful face, but the man was surly and evil in his doings. He was of the house of Caleb.


Abigail hurriedly arose and rode on a donkey with her five maids who followed her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.


David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites, the Girzites, and the Amalekites; for those were the inhabitants of the land who were of old, on the way to Shur, even to the land of Egypt.
