His servants came near and spoke to him, and said, “My father, if the prophet had asked you do some great thing, wouldn’t you have done it? How much rather then, when he says to you, ‘Wash, and be clean?’”


He was still talking with them, when the messenger came down to him and he said, “Look, this evil is from YHWH. Why should I wait for YHWH any longer?”


The king got up in the night and said to his servants, “I will now show y’all what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we are hungry. So they have left the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, ‘When they come out of the city, we will take them alive and get into the city.’”


Therefore they took two chariots with horses, and the king sent them out to the Syrian army, saying, “Y’all are to go and see.”


If we say, ‘We will enter the city,’ then the famine is in the city, and we will die there. And if we sit still here, we also die. So y’all come and let’s surrender to the army of the Syrians. If they let us live, we’ll live, and if they kill us, we will die.”


If I go out into the field, I see those slain by the sword! If I enter into the city, I see those who are sick with famine! For both the prophet and the priest go about in the land, and have no knowledge.’”


Those who are killed with the sword are better than those who are killed with hunger; for these pine away, stricken through, for lack of the fruits of the field.
