7 Then King Joash called for Jehoiada the priest, and for the other priests, and said to them, “Why aren’t y’all repairing the damage to the house? Now, y’all are to take no more money from your* treasurers, except to give* it for repair of the damage to the house.”

In the seventh year Jehoiada sent and fetched the captains over hundreds of the Carites and of the guard, and brought them to him into the house of YHWH. He made a covenant with them, and made a covenant with them in the house of YHWH, and showed them the king’s son.


Joash did that which was right in YHWH’s eyes all his days in which Jehoiada the priest instructed him.


But in the twenty-third year of King Joash the priests still had not repaired the damage to the house.


The priests consented that they should take no more money from the people, and not repair the damage to the house.


Joab said, “May YHWH make his people a hundred times as many as they are. But, my lord the king, aren’t they all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord require this thing? Why will he be a cause of guilt to Israel?”


In the seventh year, Jehoiada strengthened himself, and took the captains of hundreds—Azariah the son of Jeroham, Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, Azariah the son of Obed, Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri—into a covenant with him.


They buried him in David’s city among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, and toward God and his house.


“This is what YHWH of Armies says: These people say, ‘The time has not yet come, the time to rebuild the house of YHWH.’”
