3 Now the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. This woman was intelligent and had a beautiful face, but the man was surly and evil in his doings. He was of the house of Caleb.

When he had come near to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “See now, I know that you are a beautiful woman to look at.


For the wicked boasts of his heart’s desires. He blesses the greedy and condemns YHWH.


Every wise woman builds her house, but the foolish one tears it down with her own hands.


House and riches are an inheritance from fathers, but a prudent wife is from YHWH.


For a servant when he is king, a fool when he is filled with food,


Who can find a strong wife? For her value is far above rubies.


She opens her mouth with wisdom. Kind instruction is on her tongue.


He gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh a portion among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of YHWH to Joshua, even Kiriath Arba, named after the father of Anak (also called Hebron).


Now therefore know and consider what you will do; for evil is determined against our master and against all his house, for he is such a worthless fellow that one can’t speak to him.”


Please don’t let my lord pay attention to this worthless fellow, Nabal, for as his name is, so is he. Nabal is his name, and folly is with him; but I, your servant, didn’t see my lord’s young men whom you sent.


David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep.
